Q&A
How often do I actually need an eye exam?
For most adults with healthy vision, every 1 to 2 years is standard. However, children, seniors (over 65), and anyone with conditions like diabetes or a high prescription should undergo a comprehensive eye examination annually to monitor for changes or underlying conditions.
What is the difference between an Optometrist and an Ophthalmologist?
Optometrists: Primary eye care providers. They handle vision tests, prescribe glasses and contact lenses, diagnose and manage eye diseases, and provide specialized care like vision therapy or myopia control.
Ophthalmologists: Medical doctors who specialize in eye care. They can perform complex eye surgeries and treat advanced clinical pathologies.
How can I stop my child's nearsightedness (myopia) from getting worse?
This is a massive concern for parents today. Modern pediatric optometry relies on targeted *myopia control therapies* rather than just stronger glasses. Common methods include special orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses worn overnight, MiSight or defocus spectacle lenses, and low-dose atropine eye drops.
Are blue light blocking glasses actually useful?
While blue light from screens isn't proven to permanently damage your eyes, it does disrupt your circadian rhythm (sleep cycle) and contribute to digital eye strain. Blue light lenses are highly recommended if you spend hours in front of computers, especially in the evening.
Can I get contact lenses if I have astigmatism or need multifocals?
Absolutely. Specialty lenses have come a long way:
- Toric lenses are specifically designed to correct astigmatism.
- Multifocal contact lenses allow patients with presbyopia (age-related difficulty focusing up close) to see both near and far without reading glasses.
What happens during a Comprehensive Eye Examination?
It goes way beyond the basic "which letter is sharper" chart. A thorough exam evaluates eye muscle coordination, peripheral vision, fluid pressure inside the eye (testing for glaucoma), and a retinal health assessment using advanced imaging to check the blood vessels and optic nerve.
Why do my eyes need to be dilated, and can I drive afterwards?
Dilation widens your pupils so the optometrist can get a clear, wide-window view of your retina and optic nerve. Because it makes your eyes highly sensitive to light and blurs your near vision for a few hours, it is generally advised to bring sunglasses or have someone else drive you home.
Do you accept Elderly Health Care Vouchers or medical insurance at your center?
A: 接受。
Yes. In accordance with the Department of Health regulations, eligible seniors can use Health Care Vouchers to pay for comprehensive eye examinations conducted by Part I registered optometrists. Additionally, we provide itemized official receipts and examination reports to facilitate claims with private medical insurance providers, depending on your individual policy coverage.
Why do my eyes constantly feel dry and gritty? Will wearing contact lenses make it worse?
These are classic symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome, often triggered by prolonged screen time, air-conditioned environments, or poor tear quality. Wearing contact lenses—especially for extended hours or if using an unsuitable material—can accelerate tear evaporation and worsen dryness. Our optometrists can evaluate your tear film quality to recommend appropriate lubricants or fit you with specialized high-oxygen, moisture-retaining contact lenses.
At what age should my child have their first eye exam? Is the school vision screening enough?
Children should have their first comprehensive eye examination around 3 years old. School vision screenings generally only check basic distance visual acuity (reading the blackboard) and can easily miss conditions like strabismus (crossed eyes), amblyopia (lazy eye), or high hyperopia/astigmatism. Early detection ensures intervention during the critical window of visual development.
Can I buy contact lenses directly if I want to try them? Why do I need a professional fitting?
Contact lenses are medical devices that sit directly on your cornea. Every individual has a unique corneal curvature (Base Curve) and tear profile. Wearing lenses without a proper fitting can lead to corneal hypoxia (lack of oxygen), abrasions, or severe infections. A professional fitting includes curvature mapping, lens trial evaluation, and follow-up care to guarantee the health and safety of your eyes.
